Street Study: Miln Street, Dundee
Following a group study into the regeneration of the Blackness area of Dundee; Miln Street was identified as a potential key spine and destination of the area.
Miln Street is centrally located in the Blackness area of Dundee. It currently accommodates a large car-park behind the West Ward Works & Verdant Works - a popular tourist attraction that exhibits the history and heritage of Dundee’s industrial past - that is owned between the Verdant Works and other private owners. The street itself is often quiet and littered with parked cars. It is not a through route to any destination, resulting in low footfall and movement. Miln street is a small ‘pocket’ street that is contained within the wider Blackness context and has potential to become its own entity and ultimately a cultural venue within Dundee.

Initial Street Analysis and Proposals
Identifying key spaces with suggestive use; allowing the street to form a series of spaces, becoming individual ‘destinations’ as part of a street network. Eliminating the perception of a ‘through-route’ and highlighting the streets potential as a venue for a variety of activities.
Fundamentally, Miln Street should remain and develop as a local venue dedicated to the Dundee creative sector. The street should act as an ‘urban lab,’ for testing ideas, temporary installations and innovative projects; as well as forming a venue for temporary and permanent street exhibitions and galleries.
Miln Street becomes a venue for creativity, events and showcasing local creative talent.
To allow Miln Street to develop organically as a new cultural and creative ‘hot-spot’ in Dundee, a series of street principles and key design moves must be applied.

SUGGESTED STREET SECTION
Including proposed development terminating the street by Greg Dommett & Misa Elliot.
In order to apply the street principles, a unique grain has been generated from the structural lines of the streets surrounding, existing industrial buildings. The linear structure allows for an ordering system on the street, being suggestive of installations - temporary or permanent - and movement and activity.
